About Michael Albaugh

Michael Albaugh currently serves as the Executive Director of the Cape Symphony, bringing with him a rich tapestry of experiences spanning nearly two decades in arts leadership, education, composition, and transformative initiatives. His career is marked by significant contributions to various organizations, enhancing their operational efficiency and programmatic success through innovative strategies and a keen focus on community engagement.

The Philadelphia Orchestra

At The Philadelphia Orchestra, Michael played a pivotal role since September 2017, broadening its programming with a community-centric approach. He spearheaded the orchestra's HEAR initiative, which emphasizes health, education, access, and research, in collaboration with Temple University’s Quality of Life Research Center. This initiative includes a groundbreaking music therapy program and extensive involvement in the Philadelphia School District, where the orchestra contributes to the development and oversight of band, orchestra, and choir programs. Moreover, Michael was instrumental in establishing the All City Orchestra Summer Academy (ACOSA), a collaboration offering Philadelphia's music students a free, high-quality, immersive music education experience.

Jazz at Lincoln Center

In his tenure with Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, Michael provided visionary leadership across all departmental and programmatic decisions, merging education with advocacy, concerts, and touring. His achievements include founding the Summer Jazz Academy at Bard College and the Junior Jazz Academy at Juilliard, securing substantial scholarship funds for underserved students, and innovating Jazz at Lincoln Center’s pre-K education program, WeBop, allowing its curriculum and certification program to be adopted nationwide.

Montclair State University

At Montclair State University, Michael was recognized for his leadership in guiding the music department’s transition to the Cali School of Music, amidst its rapid growth and evolution. His tenure saw the inauguration of a new $37 million music facility and the acquisition of a significant Steinway piano package, fostering a rich learning environment and promoting positive educational advancements.

Interlochen Center for the Arts

During his directorship at Interlochen Center for the Arts, Michael was celebrated for instigating policy reforms and curriculum overhauls that led to increased enrollments, enhanced student experiences, and a notably successful Interlochen Arts Festival concert season, managing a substantial budget to ensure educational excellence.

Education

Michael’s academic foundation includes a Master’s in Composition and Music Technology from Bowling Green State University, a Doctorate in Composition and Theory from West Virginia University, and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from West Liberty State College (now West Liberty University). An accomplished researcher, his work has been published by Potenza Music LLC, underlining his commitment to advancing the field of music education and community engagement.
